As the name indicates, the Cuban Amazon parrot is found only on the island of Cuba. The remaining numbers of this beautiful Amazon parrot in the wild are so low that it is listed with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (C.I.T.E.S.), as an Appendix I species. Appendix I species are those that are threatened with extinction. They are also listed as an endangered species on the United States Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Endangered Species List. Due to their endangered status, a USFWS Captive Wildlife Permit is required for any international or interstate movement of these birds.
The Cuban Amazon is a medium-sized parrot of striking color. In Cuba they are frequently kept as pets and have shown the ability to make outstanding talkers. There is very little difference in the coloration and/or size between males and females. DNA sexing is the most reliable method to determine their sex. At our facility in Southern California, their breeding cycle is seasonal. They will commence egg laying in the early spring and conclude egg laying by the onset of the summer heat. They will usually lay a clutch consisting of four eggs and will sometimes lay two clutches in a season. We raise babies that are artificially incubated and hand-fed, as well as babies that are completely parent-raised.
The Cuban Amazon is a very gregarious species and can be noisy at times. They love to eat all types of fruits and vegetables. We provide them a diet consisting of freshly sprouted seed/bean mix, broccoli crowns, red apples, raisins, bananas, oranges, and a mix of frozen vegetables. During our afternoon inspection rounds, they are fed unsalted peanuts in the shell. Our parrots are housed outdoors and can take full advantage of natural sunlight and can frequently be seen sitting in the open during rain showers. During the summer months, their aviaries are cooled by a water misting system.
